Yes, comments on a post can now be made in-line, but that one-step-forward move has been coupled with a two-steps-back, such that comments, now, are no longer numbered. Though I suspect that today's bizarre rearrangement is a one-off glitch, I have to second the views of other GAOTDers who have found the "improved look" to be a disappointment.
